Hello. Welcome back to school. I hope that your Holidays were all you hoped for, and that Santa was good to you. This first week back has been a pretty good, though cold, one. The days always seem a little longer for the children when they can't go out and play at recess time, but it has just been too cold much of this week.
I would just as soon get this frigid cold behind us before the kids start their RugRats ski program! Many of the upper grades have already started their programs because they have several more weeks of skiing than we do. Our RugRats ski program begins on Tuesday, January 20th, and continues each Tuesday until February Break. If you have not filled in the paperwork needed for your child, please do so as soon as possible, and return it to school. Children without the necessary paperwork will have to stay at CPS in someone else's room, since I accompany my class to the mountain. This is actually a wonderful opportunity for the children of this community. Sunday River offers this program at no cost to you for equipment or lift tickets. (Yes, they are trying to encourage your child to fall in love with skiing, and therefore maintain interest in their business.) The children in first grade are taught how to ski by the ski coaches at Sunday River's ski school "Perfect Turns". (Many of the other grade levels are taught by Gould kids working with Sunday River, but our group is taught by "Perfect Turns" 's staff.) They offer instruction at all ability levels, so it doesn't matter whether your child is a budding ski star or a beginner--there will be instruction at his or her level. Should your child be using his own equipment, you can leave it for him
at Perfect Turns, or he or she can bring it with them on the bus, but he
or she will have to be able to carry it. At the first grade, they do NOT offer snowboarding classes--that starts at third grade, I believe. We leave Crescent Park at 12:15 pm, and leave the mountain at 4:00 pm. If you wish to pick up your child at Sunday River (and maybe ski with them for a little while before heading home), you can do so at the Perfect Turns building at 3:45 pm each day that we ski. The bus leaves the mountain to return the children to CPS right at 4:00, so we are usually back at school by 4:15. There are no bus runs at that time, so you will need to make arrangements to collect your child at that time. Please let me know to whom I may release your child on each ski day. MKA is still an option, if you can't be at school at 4:15. MKA closes at 6 pm. Though I will not be skiing with the children, I will be close by should there be any problems, and I will be dismissing them at the end of the day. When you pick up your child (whether at the mountain or at school), please speak to me so that I know your child has been safely handed off to you or an adult of your choice. Thank you. I always worry a little that I won't get each child where he or she is supposed to go, though I have never lost one yet! Your help with this would be greatly appreciated!
If Santa brought ipads or ipods to your house, and you are looking for apps to use with your child, I would be happy to provide a list for you of the apps we are using (or will use) at school. Just let me know, and I will make that list available to you.
There has been a death in my family, and I will be away from school Monday afternoon (1/12) and all of Tuesday (1/13) to attend the funeral and deal with family business. I will let the kids know Monday morning. Mr. Brown said he would attempt to have the same substitute for me on both of those days. Unfortunately for me (but fortunately for her), Mrs. Cole (my usual sub) is not available on these days because she is in Florida on vacation! Please encourage your child to be cooperative, and on his or her best behavior during this time period. I expect to be back on Wednesday, barring any unexpected issues. Thank you for your understanding. Have a good weekend, and I will be in touch a week from Monday.
