News From Our Classroom

Hello, everyone.  This newsletter will be short and sweet, considering I am up to my eyeballs in data for the report cards.  All of our assessments are complete, and we're beginning to wind down in preparation for summer.  This is a busy week for me (records to finish, data to calculate, placement meetings to attend, and your child's portfolio to ready for next year's teacher), but it should be a good week for your child.  Here's how it's gonna go:
Monday is our last "regular" day of school, so the children will have the chance to read in groups, read to each other, play some math games, do some art, and play outside.
Tuesday is a day off for them, as you know, because voting will happen in our building.  Teachers will be in school, but we will be using the day to tackle some of the administrative "end-of-the-year" paperwork.
Wednesday morning is our field trip to Pooh Corner Farms.  Please have your child here by 8:00.  We will leave school at 8:30 and will head back to school by 10:30.  Please have your child dress for the anticipated weather, including good walking shoes like sneakers (no flip flops, please). The kids will be back for their normal recess at 11.  I will not be at school Wednesday afternoon, as I am taking a half-day personal day.  I wanted to be with your child for our field trip, but need the afternoon to attend to some family business.  Linda Taylor,  the lady who has been volunteering in my classroom several mornings a week for the majority of the year, will be attending the field trip with my class, and then will take over when I leave for the afternoon.  The children will use the time in the afternoon with Linda to read to themselves, read to a partner, play some math games, and watch a few safety videos.  If there is time, Linda will show the children a short video about the Velveteen Rabbit, a book I read to them last week.  (If there is not enough time, I will have to see if I can fit it in Monday afternoon, after "Step Up" Day.)  Finally, the kids will have their gym class, as usual.
On Thursday morning, we will head to Mt. Vernon, Maine to visit Dew Haven Animal Kingdom.  Again, please have your child dress for the day, and wear sneakers.  He or she will also need a bottle or two of water, a snack or two, and a bag lunch.  It is our intention to be back in time for buses, or whatever you intend for after school activities.
Friday is the PTA field day, weather permitting.  We will come in out of the sun for snack and water, lunch and water, and snack and water again.  Please send in a change of clothes (and perhaps a towel), as there is talk of water activities in the afternoon. Friday afternoon, your child will bring home his or her notice of classroom placement for next year in his or her folder.
Monday, June 19th, will be this year's "Step Up Day".  Your child should come to my room as he or she does every day, and I will line them up and send them off to their "new" classrooms as groups.  "Step Up Day" lasts from 8:30 - 10:30.  Monday afternoon will involve a Coyote Celebration, and a little "Good bye" event in our classroom, as I have some goodbye presents for the kids.
Tuesday, June 20, is our last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year.  I am going to have the kids help me pick up and rearrange the classroom a little, clean out desks, (have our goodbye time (if we didn't fit it in on Monday), and share one or two more good books.  Lunch will be a picnic in the hallway at 10:15, and then the kids will play until dismissal time.  I hope, if you decide to pick up your child on Tuesday, that you will be part of the end-of-the-year lawn farewell or part of the bus/ car parade.
Let me thank you for allowing me to be your child's teacher this year.  Thank you for all of your support this year.  I am so proud of all that they have accomplished.  Keep them reading, writing, and doing math activities throughout the summer, and they should be ready for the new school year in the fall.
